Science for Preschoolers - Fairy Garden
This is a great time of the year to learn how seeds sprout. There is no better way to teach preschoolers about sprouting then by making a fairy garden (or a gnome garden).
I modified a few small birdhouses by enlarging the opening to make a door for the fairy houses. I bought some plastic flowers and removed all the flowers and leaves from the stems. I then painted some flowers on a small bag of glass rocks, and got small plastic fairies and animals.
The kids enjoyed placing potting mix in a shallow wooden box and they then decorated the small fairy houses by gluing on fabric flowers and leaves.
We placed all the decorations in the box and then sprinkled lots and lots of mixed beans: garbanzo beans, black eyed beans, peas and more (all from a bag of mixed beans bought at the grocery store).
Then we had to wait and observe how the fairy garden grows...
A few weeks later the garden looks great....
The kids enjoy playing with the animals and fairies in the garden by moving them around
